Self-Checking Puzzles

These self-checking puzzles are fun practice for students.  I use them in stations and they always enjoy discovering the pictures.

This puzzle is Summer Fun and gives students practice with mental math, 10 more, 10 less etc.

Math Programs

Our school has used Everyday Math for about 12 years, but there has been a lot of supplementation.  I liked it at first, but over the years it was less helpful to my students.  As a teacher, I could clearly see which teachers supplemented and which did not. As a parent, I didn't care for it. There simply wasn't enough practice.

This year we are starting My Math.  Their on-line program sold me! It'll be so nice to not need to create my own PowerPoint lessons for an activity!  I'm excited for the change. I've used parts of the program previously, but I still found that some students just need additional practice.  I've created a few place value activities to start off the year, and hope to create more as we move through the program.

Spring break has finally arrived!  This has been an incredibly busy school year, and I've missed creating.  After reviewing some math data for my class, I decided to make a fun little review game for properties of multiplication. Kids love puzzles!

Our students begin testing once we return from break.  We'll be busy reviewing!

Arrays with Turkeys

My students needed a little extra practice with arrays and repeated addition, so today they worked with turkeys.

We also reviewed prefixes and suffixes with Roll and Read.  They worked in groups of 7 and they played well together in a larger group.  It's ideal to work in smaller groups to keep the game moving, but if they work well in larger groups then give it a try.  I only had 2 large dice so we used larger groups.

After playing the game (Roll and Read)  today, a helper passed out 7 cards to each student.  They wrote the words on the feathers and then used one word in a sentence.  This was another great activity to use when students spend the week testing!
