Descriptive Hearts

Last week we worked on writing descriptive paragraphs about hearts.  Today we shared them and the students did a terrific job with their descriptions.  All but one or two hearts were guessed on the first try.

Don't Eat the Candy!

We had some fun in math on Thursday!  We worked in groups to complete several activities with the candy hearts.  Students need to be able to construct a graph with the correct labels.  The trickiest part on the test is actually making the graph that is being asked of them.  Often times they will make the last one that we practiced in class.

They had fun working together in groups.  Some groups communicated a little more clearly with each other than others. They worked in large groups of 5 and did pretty well.

Next year, I think I'll do this towards the end of the day instead of the first period of the day. :)  Skipping the week of the full moon might be a good plan, too.

Happy Valentine's Day!

We had our parties yesterday and we were off today.  Crazy week for parties!

Right now I have two products on sale for only $3.  My class really enjoyed both activities!

Persuasive Writing

Today we finished up with our persuasive writing pieces and shared them.  Students could choose between these topics:  school uniforms, dangerous dogs, classroom pets and later school start time.

My class likes dogs and sleeping in!  Those were the most popular topics. Do you see the channel 10 news helicopter?

We also worked on some multiplication.

Tomorrow we'll be working on this Decimal Monster Activities. There are 4 activities and I'll divide my class into 4 groups.  There are enough cards for 6 students to share.

The materials are all set up and ready to go for tomorrow.  How great are these trays?  I wasn't sure I'd have much use for them, but they've been great for science and math.  The students have to be a little more careful carrying them than they would with a basket. I like that they can easily see the materials and reach for them. We use baskets for math stations, but the trays work well for whole class activities.

Descriptive Writing

This week we will work on writing descriptive paragraphs.  In December, they worked on this. They enjoyed it, so I thought we could use hearts for February. Click on the picture to download this Freebie.

Decimal Love Bugs

Here's what we've been up to in math.

After using a PowerPoint with dry erase boards to review decimals, we made our own examples to display in the hallway.

This week we'll practice some more with this activity that I just posted in my store.

Here's a Little Freebie

We've had a lot of snow days!  This year our district used our 3 e-calamity days.  E-calamity days, or e-days, are electronic school days.  We have assignments posted, or blizzard bags sent home with work for students to complete.  They have 2 weeks to complete the assignments.

Last week, my first-grade son had a reading assignment, so I put together a little wintery printable for him to use. He thought it was pretty cool to use a fancy paper and a fun little border by Scrappin Doodles.

Multiplying x3

Today we worked on multiplying by 3 using our number lines that we created last week.  My students loved using their colorful number lines to solve math facts.  After a 4 long days of testing, this cutting and pasting activity was just what they needed!

My class talks. They can talk a lot. When they talk, they usually stop working.  So today, instead of mindlessly cutting and pasting (which can lead to a lot of talking) I called out their names and they had to say the fact they were cutting or pasting.  Everyone finished!  Some of my slowest workers even finished first.

Look at this pretty number line.  This student is very creative!  She was saying the facts in her head as she colored them. :)

Acquisition of Vocabulary

Every January I begin a unit on Famous People.  The little black and white printed books that I use for this unit are filled with some good basic vocabulary words.  It's also great for having students search for information because there isn't too much text on the page and every student can read it! At the end of the week they have a vocabulary test.

This year I added vocabulary blocks to the unit.  Students write the words and then draw a simple picture that reminds them of the word meanings.  I love their drawings.  It was fun to see how they visualize each word.

Oops!  I cut off the vocabulary word. Can you guess the word?
A) devise
          B) communicate
 C) popular
 correct
The correct answer is C.

Here's a copy of the vocabulary block printable.
* This is my first try with using Google Documents. It appears that I have an issue.  I'm working on it. :)
